Governor Umahi gives two hawkers N1m for tuition, upkeep

Luck smiled on two teenage hawkers in Abakaliki on Tuesday as Governor David Umahi doled out N1m to them.

The two children, Ukamaka Ikema and Chimuanya Nwarie, had run into the governor who was inspecting the Akanu Ibiam roundabout flyover along the Transhara Expressway in the city.

Ukamaka,  aged 10 is a primary three pupil of Ezikwo Primary School   while   Chimuanya, who is 12,   is  a JS I student of Evangel Nursery,Primary and Secondary School  in the state capital.

Governor Umahi, who was in company with his deputy, Kelechi Igwe, and some members of the state Executive Council, had on noticing that his security aides frightened the children, directed his orderly to bring them to him.

After interacting with Kamala, who was hawking sachet water, the governor asked his ADC to deploy a patrol vehicle to go and   pick up the parents of the teenagers from their homes. The children had told the governor that they had closed from school before hitting the streets to hawk.

A statement on Wednesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Emma Anya, explained that at the Government House, Umahi interacted with the mothers of the two children, warning them against sending their wards to hawk. After hearing the plight of the children’s parents, he approved N500,000 for each of them   for the upkeep and tuition of the two children.

TNV’s Take:

What exactly is the moral of this story? Governance is by actively working, not by bestowing favours upon whom you choose for a news/photo op. What happens to the remaining millions?

It's your turn, what do you think?

  1. My thoughts exactly TNV...which money is he giving out? Is it the one he made before he was sworn in as a governor? or the revenue allocated to the state i.e meant for its inhabitants. I just dont get it!!! should we be grateful, jubilate and dance for what is already ours.
As you pointed out already- Under what part of the budget is the giving being done? How is this "giving" being accounted for? How much are governors entitled to as their monthly take home...everything is sooo hazy. God help us.
If there is a proper social welfare scheme in place to handle the issues of children hawkers, then no governor should need to "give" its under-privildged citizens millions at a whim. But they enjoy making us feel like they are doing us all one big favour by once-in-a-while flauting the proceeds of "Robbery-by-pen". The amount of power we give these so called politicians is unbelieveable. Some of them see themselves as mini-gods.
    Give ko...give ni!
